Why the same armor handles two hits differently

The armor bar is only the first input. Damage size, toughness, source rules, and enchantment protection determine the final result together.

Armor points set the base

Each equipped piece adds armor points. For applicable low-damage hits, twenty points can reach an 80% base reduction.

Toughness protects the percentage

Heavy hits push ordinary armor toward its minimum. Diamond and Netherite toughness slow that loss instead of adding a flat shield.

Enchantments reduce what remains

Protection uses enchantment protection factor after base armor. The percentages multiply; they are not simply added together.

Bypass matters

Not every damage source touches the armor layer

Falls, ongoing burning, drowning, poison, and Wither damage bypass base armor in the modeled Java rules. General or matching specialized Protection can still help several of those cases, which is why the calculator reports the layers separately.

The short version of the combat math

These answers describe the model used above and the limits most likely to change a result.

What does armor toughness do?

High-damage hits reduce the percentage supplied by normal armor points. Toughness slows that loss, which is why Diamond and Netherite hold up better against heavy attacks.

Does full armor always reduce damage by 80%?

No. Twenty armor points can reach 80% against small applicable hits, but the armor formula becomes less effective as incoming damage rises. Some sources bypass base armor entirely.

How does Protection IV on four pieces combine with armor?

Four Protection IV pieces provide 64% enchantment reduction. It is applied after base armor rather than added directly, so an 80% armor layer plus 64% Protection reduces 92.8% in total for a source affected by both.

Can one armor piece have Protection and a specialized protection together?

Fire, Blast, and Projectile Protection conflict with general Protection on the same piece, so the calculator reserves a separate equipped piece for them. Feather Falling can coexist with general Protection on equipped boots.
