Plan the base without hiding shared layers

Pyramid level and beacon layout are separate decisions. These answers cover accepted blocks, shared footprints, powers, and beam clearance.

How many blocks does a full beacon pyramid need?

One level-four beacon pyramid needs 164 valid mineral blocks across 3×3, 5×5, 7×7, and 9×9 layers. Crafting those blocks from one mineral each takes 1,476 ingots or gems.

Can different mineral blocks be mixed in a beacon base?

Yes. Iron, gold, emerald, diamond, and netherite blocks can be mixed in the same pyramid without changing the beacon's power or range. Copper blocks do not activate a vanilla beacon.

Can multiple beacons share one pyramid?

Yes. Adjacent beacons can share rectangular mineral layers. Two adjacent level-four beacons need 188 shared blocks rather than 328 blocks for two completely separate pyramids.

What blocks stop a beacon beam?

A beacon needs a clear light-transmitting column upward. Regular glass and stained glass can color or pass the beam, while most opaque blocks and tinted glass block it.

From footprint to active power

Plan the mineral base before placing the beam

Beacon levels change the footprint, material total, range, and available powers. Choose separate pyramids only when the bases cannot touch; adjacent beacons can save a large number of blocks with shared rectangular layers.

Edition & scope note

The pyramid totals and accepted mineral blocks apply to modern vanilla Java and Bedrock. The displayed range is the beacon cuboid's horizontal and downward reach; its upward reach extends farther and dimension-specific edge cases still apply.

    Choose the power level

    Level one starts with a 3×3 base. A full level-four pyramid adds 5×5, 7×7, and 9×9 layers for 164 mineral blocks per isolated beacon.

    Describe the layout honestly

    Use separate pyramids for distant beams. For adjacent beacons, enter the column and row arrangement so every shared layer is counted once.

    Verify the beam and payment

    Keep the column above each beacon light-transmitting, then pay one accepted mineral item when selecting or changing the active power.
