Gear maintenance / expected lifespan

Minecraft Durability Calculator

Estimate remaining one-point durability events with Unbreaking and the minimum XP needed for Mending, without applying the tool formula to armor.

Why armor differs

Armor keeps a 60% base chance to lose durability, then adds 40% divided by level plus one. Unbreaking III therefore averages about 1.43×, not 4×.

Why Mending is a minimum

Each collected XP repairs two durability on one randomly selected eligible damaged item. Other equipped Mending gear can intercept the orb.

Results model expected one-point durability events, not guaranteed uses. Actions that spend multiple durability points must resolve each point according to the game's rules.

Durability questions

Expected lifespan without the universal-formula myth

Unbreaking is probabilistic, armor follows a separate rule, and Mending depends on which damaged item receives each orb.

Does Unbreaking III make every item last four times longer?

Tools, weapons, and most non-armor items average four times as many one-point durability events with Unbreaking III. Armor uses a different formula and averages about 1.43 times as many events.

How much durability does Mending repair per XP?

Mending converts one experience point from a collected orb into two durability points on one eligible damaged item. Other equipped Mending items can receive the orb instead, so the calculator shows a theoretical minimum.

Are expected uses guaranteed?

No. Unbreaking is probabilistic. The estimate is a long-run average for events that normally cost one durability point; attacks, armor hits, crossbows, and other actions can consume durability differently.

How can I see exact durability in Java Edition?

Press F3 + H to enable advanced tooltips, then hover a damaged item in the inventory to see its remaining and maximum durability values.

Expected life, not a guarantee

Separate durability chance from repair cost

Unbreaking rolls are probabilistic and armor uses a different formula from tools. Compare expected one-point durability events first, then treat Mending XP as a theoretical minimum rather than a guaranteed collection route.

Edition & scope note

Expected events assume actions that normally cost one durability point. Attacks, armor damage, crossbows, Elytra flight, and other mechanics can spend durability differently. Item maximums and offhand workflows can also differ between Java and Bedrock.

  1. 01

    Enter the real durability values

Use advanced tooltips or a trusted item reference for maximum and remaining durability. The remaining value cannot exceed the item's maximum.

  2. 02

    Choose tool or armor rules

Tools and most items gain an average multiplier of level plus one. Armor retains a much higher chance to lose durability and therefore gains less.

  3. 03

    Read Mending as a minimum

One collected XP repairs two durability on one eligible damaged Mending item, but another equipped item can receive the orb instead.
